History The ESSE Institute[1] was established in 1987 in the presence of the International Chairman of the Sathya Sai Organization. The inter-European faculty has ever since conducted seminars for Sai teachers, office bearers and active members in the Sathya Sai Organization (SSO) all over Europe. Organizational StructureESSE has two main branches: One is the above only for members of the SSSO. The second is the European EduCare Academy developing seminars for teachers and various professions and segments of society outside the SSO [2] Training Overview The training consists of several units most of them covered over a week end seminar in the respective country [3]. The objective of The ESSE Institute is to have national ESSE teacher trainers in all European countries, and then to meet with these trainers every second year for an update and exchange of experiences. Such European Trainer meetings have taken place regularly since 1990. The training units consist of lectures and workshops. The contents are the five values and the five methods, adult learning processes, science and spirituality and self evaluation. In the SSO also how the values and especially the methods are used in the centres and groups, as well as the art of public speaking. All training seminars and ESSE activities/Academy activities are conducted by a team of trainers, minimum 3 and mostly more depending on the task. All training by the ESSE faculty is done in English with translations. Training of professional teachers and establishment of schoolsA part of the European EduCare Academy deals exclusively with training within the formal educational system (professional teachers and educators) as well as establishment of Sathya Sai Schools and other educational institutions also including adoption of existing schools. This part of the European EduCare Academy is very much the same as ISSE in Thailand, Taisse in Africa or the Institutes in Australia, Brazil, India or Japan, and it has informally been referred to as EISSE (European ISSE).
[1] ESSE means being in Latin , it is formed from the first letter in the four words: European Sathya Sai Education
[2] For the support of this a European Foundation Sai European Care Foundation or S.E.C Foundation has been established with its main office in Denmark. [3] A comprehensive overview of the unit system conducted by the ESSE Institute for members of the SSO is available from the responsible European Central Co-ordinator/Deputy Central Co-ordinator. ESSE has published a book for participants in Unit 2 of its training programme: Sathya Sai Babas Teachings as well as an Instructors Manual.
